In RELEASE, participants attach their smartphone to a swing suspended over an excavation. In selfie mode, the device records their act of letting go, then continues its pendular movement alone. The apparatus’s length stretches that moment in time. The work accompanies the start of a construction project at Hochschule Karlsruhe in 2026.
The camera leaves the hand while continuing to produce its owner’s image. This gesture makes an everyday dependence tangible: what remains of our control when our technical gaze moves away from us?
