Olga Kisseleva’s artistic projects are rooted in rigorous research and demand extensive preparation. The COVID-19 pandemic offered her an opportunity to focus on the behavior of viruses, giving rise to a new edition of her long-term project Power Struggle. Originally initiated in 2011 for the exhibition Red Cavalry: Creation and Power in Soviet Russia between 1917 and 1945 at Tate Modern and La Casa Encendida, this evolving body of work explores the analogies between viral behavior and human conduct in situations of conflict or adversity, as interpreted through the lens of Game Theory.
At the height of the global pandemic, when collective attention was fixed on the virus and its mechanisms, Kisseleva launched a new series of performances. In these, she invites leading experts from disciplines directly or indirectly affected by the crisis – medicine, virology, biology, but also economics, politics, and culture – to analyze viral confrontations as if they were divergences applied within their own field of expertise.
