Zeger Reyers — Hard Water (2003), Schiedam

A porcelain cascade makes the fragility of domestic order visible.

Zeger Reyers’s Hard Water: a cascade of hundreds of white porcelain plates fills the corner of a room at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

Porcelain plates accumulate from floor to ceiling, like a flow caught just before it spills over. In Hard Water, a familiar object from the dinner table becomes a building material whose fragility remains visible. Repetition gives a domestic gesture an almost geological scale: a mass takes shape while every edge retains the possibility of breakage. The installation holds the order we construct in tension with the forces that might undo it.

Location

Born in Voorburg in 1966, Zeger Reyers lives and works in The Hague. His installations bring manufactured objects into contact with natural processes. Fungi, plant growth, water and gravity unsettle everyday uses and expose the vulnerability of the environments we build.
