The sewing machines begin to play by themselves. Their pulses fall into step, lamps flicker, and the rhythm intensifies: a domestic workshop takes on an almost animal presence. In Sewing Machine Orchestra, Martin Messier turns familiar objects into instruments whose every vibration becomes audible.
The Canadian artist works across sound, light and movement. Contact microphones and computer programming reveal another memory within these machines: repeated gestures, labour and family histories.
