A concave spiral of white light draws the eye towards a surveillance camera. Then the visitor’s face appears in the rings and dissolves into their movement. In Black Hole, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer turns facial recognition into an experience of erasure: the system captures a presence without building a lasting archive. What remains of our image when the machine that recognises us also orchestrates our disappearance?
